Periodic polymers can be made by self assembly, directed self assembly and by photolithography.   It is important to be able to control their long range order and domain orientation in bulk as well as in thin film forms.  The resultant structures can be hierarchical and provide new opportunities of achieving new types of properties.  For example, such materials provide a versatile platform for 1, 2 and 3D periodic nano-micro scale composites and these can serve for example, as photonic and or phononic crystals for electromagnetic and elastic waves. Current interest is in our group focuses using design - modeling, fabrication and measurement of polymer-based periodic materials for applications as <i>tunable</i> optics and <i>tunable</i> phonon flow.  Several examples will be described including the design of structures for the creation of block polymer photonic crystals that can respond to their environment (pH, temperature, mechanical forces) and for polymer based structures displaying multispectral band gaps for elastic waves.
