Submicron-sized mesoporous metal oxide spheres were prepared by an aerosol-spray-pyrolysis method and their photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution was examined in an aqueous MeOH solution by visible light irradiation. The structure of spherical mesoporous oxides was studied by transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and N<sub>2</sub> adsorption-desorption isotherm measurements. High specific surface area and highly crystalline framework were achieved by adjusting the amount of structure directing agent and calcining condition. High photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution from methanol was achieved due to the combination of high surface area and high crystallinity.
