Several CrCl3 complexes bearing tridentate NCN pincer ligands were synthesized. The ligands were of the type 1,3-bis[(3-alkyl-2-pyridyl)(CH2)n]imidazole-2-ylidene (L, Figure 1). The bite angle of L was modified by changing n from 0 to 1. The bulkiness of L was modified by changing the alkyl from H to CH3 and to C(CH3)3. All complexes were characterized spectroscopically and by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The catalytic activity of the complexes towards ethylene oligomerization and polymerization was investigated using methylalumoxane (MAO) as cocatalyst. It was found that all complexes exhibit catalytic activity and more studies are underway to determine the extent of this activity.
