Carbon monoxide has been found to be useful as a therapeutic agent in medical applications. However, the use of gaseous CO is not a preferred therapy due to the well-known toxic effect. To minimize this undesirable effect, different types of molecules that are capable of releasing CO, commonly referred to as CORM, have been developed over the past decades. Several classes of CORMs have been reported so far, but most are toxic or contain heavy metals and few have pharmacological activities in physiological conditions.  Development of CORMs that possess effective therapeutic properties such as water solubility, low toxicity, and stability in physiological conditions is still under way. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a group of novel CORMs that have the properties listed above.
