Our previous investigations demonstrated that the [closo-B10H10]2- anion is a viable structural element of highly quadrupolar liquid crystals with interesting photophysical properties.[1] The analogous derivatives of the [closo-B12H12]2- dianion were unavailable due to lack of appropriate synthetic methods. We now have developed functionalization of and functional groups transformations in the [closo-B12H12]2- cluster and prepared quadrupolar derivatives of structure I and ion pairs of structure II.
