At Eastman Chemical Company, it has been a guiding principle that we should seek to understand our processes at a molecular level to optimize operations and value for processes we may operate. This approach not only guides reactor design and operation, but the inherent detailed kinetic and thermodynamic exercises required for this approach also enable unique opportunities for process intensification, including reactive distillation, reactive chromatography, extractive distillation, and reactive separations. In this presentation, I will provide examples from catalysis, including the carbonylation of ethylene, methyl acetate and dimethyl ether, and organic chemistry, including ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and cyclopropyl amine. Time permitting, examples of reactive distillation including methyl acetate generation from acetic acid and methanol and generation of vinyl acetate from acetic anhydride and acetaldehyde will be provided.
