The five-, six-, and seven-membered 1, 3-thiaza-4-one heterocycles are known for their bioactivity. The most common route to these compounds is condensation of an imine with a thioacid. When N-aryl imines are used, the reaction to make the five-membered rings is slower than when N-alkyl imines are used. In the case of the six-membered rings, the reaction using N-aryl imines often has not worked at all, so the number of N-aryl compounds in the literature has been limited. A general method has now been developed using dehydrating agent T3P and applied to preparation of a variety of 2, 3-diaryl six- and seven-membered 1, 3-thiaza-4-ones. These compounds have been studied for their structural, spectroscopic, and biological properties.
