Thin Film Photovoltaic material (2nd generation) is attractive for its low material costs as well as shorter energy payback time compared to traditional silicon based photovoltaic processing. We analyze the photoelectrochemical properties of potential PV materials such as Kesterite (Cu2ZnSnS4) and Enargite (Cu3AsS4) in their natural single crystal or multicrystalline forms. Both minerals, along with others, give photoelectrochemical signals without modification. From our techniques such as linear sweep voltammetry under periodic illumination and external quantum efficiency measurements, we can quantify the band gap and I-V characteristics of the materials in their natural form and the effects of impurities such as Fe for Kesterite and Sb for Enargite which are based on localities in which the minerals are obtained. Additionally, Mott-Schottky measurements allow us to calculate carrier concentrations for the minerals as well.
