Airborne particles have well-recognized effects on human health, visibility and climate.  A significant fraction of these particles result from the reactions of gas phase precursors to form low volatility products that nucleate to form new particles or add to existing particles to grow them to sizes important for light scattering and serving as cloud condensation nuclei.  While much progress has been made in recent years, many outstanding questions remain regarding the major species involved in nucleation as well as those involved in particle growth.  The results of current studies in our laboratory to understand and quantify these processes using a large volume, slow flow aerosol flow system or smaller, fast flow systems that cover time scales from ~ 2 s to 2 hours, combined with analytical techniques for measuring the size distributions, phase and chemical composition of particles, will be presented.  The implications for modeling particles in air and hence estimating their impacts will be discussed.<br/>
