Fluorescent sensors are a sensitive and practical approach to the detection of biologically and environmentally significant cations. The sensor studied here incorporates both a spirolactam ring-closed rhodamine for metal detection and an electroactive anthraquinone subunit. The emission intensity of this sensor is modified by the redox state of the anthraquinone, the solvent in which the sensor is dissolved, and the presence/absence of select metal cations. Emission wavelength, intensity, and whether the sensor is selective for Hg(II) or Cu(II) varies depending on the percentage of water mixed in with the acetonitrile; only minimal enhancement is observed for a series of other metal ions tested.  The synthetic scheme, emission studies, and characterization by single crystal x-ray diffraction will be presented.<br/>
