A series of novel polyoxometalate (POM)-PNIPAM hybrids were synthesized with precisely controlled functionality. These hybrids demonstrate reversible fast self-assembly behavior in water under temperature stimuli, as characterized by laser light scattering (LLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Zeta potential analyzer. We found different types of POMs and counterions impact the self-assembled structure at room temperature. Upon heating up above a transition temperature, bilayer vesicles were formed in water. The vesicle size increases upon heating. The transition temperature and the dimension of the assembly can be adjusted by the ratio of POM/PNIPAM and extra salts. The development of such stimulative vesicles provides new and useful means for catalytic and biomedical applications.
