Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions constitute one of the most powerful strategies for the formation of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. Due to the importance of these reactions in both academia and industry alike, the individual steps in these catalytic cycles have been well studied from a structure-activity relationship perspective. However, the generation of the active L<sub>n</sub>-Pd(0) can often be challenging and has been less well established. To address this issue, we have recently developed a series of novel substituted and unsubstituted pi-allyl Pd-precatalysts which activate very quickly under mild conditions to generate the active Pd(0) species. Several applications including challenging Suzuki-Miyaura, ketone enolate arylation, and Buchwald-Hartwig amination reactions have been successfully demonstrated utilizing precatalysts with this scaffold. Some insight into the mechanism of activation is also provided.
