The well-designed combination of complementary electron-rich and electron-poor aromatics can lead to the self-assembly of alternating face-centered columns, termed donor-acceptor columnar liquid crystals (DACLCs).  These materials display physical and optical properties distinct from the independent molecules, and can be predictably tuned through the modular mixing of components.  Here, we describe a systematic investigation of new DACLC materials incorporating highly-substituted anthracene derivatives as donor components.  The mesophase ranges of these materials are highly variable, leading in some cases to room-temperature columnar liquid crystals.  Several of these materials show promising optical and electronic properties, with broad UV/Vis/NIR absorption.  The ability to independently tune optical and physical properties of these materials will be discussed, as well as their potential to serve as new types organic electronic materials.
