The development of imido-bearing analogs to the ubiquitous uranyl ion (UO­<sub>2</sub><sup>2+</sup>) has provided actinide chemists with a wide range of compounds for studying the bonding and reactivity of multiple bonds between ligand atoms and the uranium f-manifold. The presented work will describe our recent efforts in this area, including synthetic methods for generating complexes with multiple 1σ,2π donors and the use of physical inorganic and high-level computational techniques for understanding their electronic structures. The degree of covalency in U=E π-bonds is found to depend significantly on the geometry, ligand field, and donor identity, and the delineation of these factors provides a framework for understanding the chemistry of this unusual class of organoactinide complexes.
