The interphase is a three-dimensional reinforcing region between the fiber and the polymer matrix in a polymer matrix composite (PMC). Its chemical, physical and mechanical properties are known to distinctly differ from those of the fiber and the bulk polymer matrix. The variations in the properties across the interphase play a major role in the optimal mechanical performance of the composite.<sup>1</sup> Despite the great interest, the nature of interfacial bond and interphase phenomena is still a subject of debate. This is mainly associated with the challenges in experimental characterization at the nanoscale. This work investigates the detail nanoscale spectroscopic and microscopic characterization of the interphase in order to understand chemical functionality / bonding mechanism, nanoscale morphology and its resultant mechanical properties.
