The National Science Foundation (NSF) supports research and education that will enable the development of sustainable and economical energy systems that are sufficient to power the present and future needs of society while minimizing adverse environmental impacts and social consequences. Towards this end, advanced materials based on earth-abundant elements play a significant role in the development of clean and sustainable energy technologies for renewable energy production, energy storage, energy efficiency, and reduction of carbon emissions. This presentation overviews recent NSF programs and investments in advanced materials for sustainable energy, focusing on nanostructured materials and devices for solar photovoltaics, solar fuels, and energy storage.
