Empowering students to take active roles in STEM departments can improve the culture and working environment. When these active roles revolve around the idea of connecting to values that even the playing field by celebrating the accomplishments of scientists who belong to under-represented groups in science, the students can expand their network of support and connect to outreach activities. My experience initiating student groups at a few institutions will be discussed.
