Optimization of collection of volatile compounds after SFE is of key importance in achieving high analyte recoveries and extraction efficiencies. Extraction step in SFE has been well characterized theoretically and experimentally whereas the collection step has been relatively ignored. In this study, different solvents (isopropanol, acetonitrile, methanol, methylene chloride, and cyclohexane) trapping efficiency was explored. The results were applied in extraction of essential oils, which comprised of volatile compounds. Solvent with high viscosity effectively trapped higher volatile compounds. Volume of trapping solvent was important for less vicious solvent and insignificant for vicious solvent. Depressurization time had higher effect on low molecular weight compounds and overall high-flow rates coupled with long dynamic extraction time had lower recoveries. It was noted that no single solvent parameter could conclusively correlate trapping efficiency.
