Carbon dioxide which is, among other anthropic factors, responsible for global warming, is also an abundant, cheap and non-toxic C1 resource. This paper explores original routes to generate cyclic five-membered and six-membered carbonates from carbon dioxide, excluding the use of toxic phosgene and of its equivalent and thus creating a new avenue to high value added recycling and reduction of carbon dioxide in atmosphere. The synthesized cyclic carbonates are meant to be used in polycondensation and ring opening polymerization to generate polycarbonates. These polycarbonates are functionalized with chemically active features that open up the range use of these active polymers.<br/>
