The presence of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in numerous consumer products raises growing concern about their release into the environment. However, little is known about the interaction of AgNPs with (a) natural organic matter (NOM) and (b) minerals, which affects the nanomaterial transport and availability in geochemical and aquatic systems. (a) To investigate these aspects, the main components of NOM, namely humic and fulvic acids (0-160.0 mg L-1), were incubated with negatively charged, Creighton AgNPs (13.4 mg L-1) in a porous media (glass beads), at different benchmark times (0-60 days). The Raman analysis suggested that NOM forms surface-complexed species with AgNPs at a pH of 3.4, mainly through the oxygen atoms of the carboxylic moieties located in close proximity to the nanoparticle surface. (b) The interaction between AgNPsz (17.2 mg L-1) and mineral surfaces was characterized using corundum, α-Al2O3, as a mineral model (1.0 x 104 mg L-1) in the presence of an ionic strength adjuster (50 mM NaNO3).
