Group 11 transition metals are important to society and are used by most on a daily basis. The three formamidinate ligands being examined are 2,6-dimethylphenyl, 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, and 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl. The synthesis of these dinuclear Cu(I) complexes as well as their redox and insertion chemistry with I<sub>2</sub> and CS<sub>2</sub>, respectively, to afford di-, tri-, tetra-, and hexanuclear clusters will be presented. The cluster size is found to be dictated based on the ligand’s steric properties. Using EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations on the iodine oxidized products we show different electronic structures based on the formamidinate but all contain mixed-valent, Cu(I,II) products.
