Since 2006 the focus of the REU site at Texas A&M U.-Commerce has been to reach out to a diverse population of community college students in Northeast Texas and the borders of Texas with Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. 9-10 students per year were selected with special emphasis given to the underrepresented groups typically enrolled in the community colleges in this region. In the last 6 years, about 36% of REU participants transferred to TAMUC and 95% of these students finished their STEM degrees while 81% of the rest of the participants completed their STEM degrees. Program information, such as recruiting strategy, student selection, research project matching, summer program structure, daily interaction, evaluation etc., will be discussed in detail.
