Research on gold-catalyzed reactions has emerged as a very important topic in organic synthetic chemistry. In recent years, several important mechanistic intermediates have been isolated, including gold(I) alkene and alkyne π-complexes and mixed gold-silver complexes. Isolation of such complexes has depended predominantly on the presence of strong donor ligands (N-heterocyclic carbenes and t-butylphosphines), while complexes with triarylphosphine ligands are more sensitive and decompose easily. Use of sterically hindered <i>o</i>-biphenyl substituted phosphine ligands has been shown to slow decomposition processes. Therefore we have chosen to examine the properties of complexes with a diphenylbiphenylphosphine ligand as a way to explore the details of gold catalyzed reactions that utilize related electron poor ligands. The impact of this ligand on the reactivity and stability of gold(I) mechanistic intermediates will be presented.
