We show that nanoparticle suspensions act as temperature dependent solutions. We investigated the effect of temperature on the solubility of spherical 5nm monodisperse gold nanoparticles. Thiolated gold nanoparticles dissolved in toluene were synthesized on site. A custom built temperature controlled centrifuge along with a modified UV- Vis spectrometer were used to measure the absorbance of the nanoparticle supernatant in equilibrium above the aggregated nanoparticle precipitate. Plotting the natural log of the mole fraction of gold nanoparticles versus inverse temperature yields the nanoparticle enthalpy of dissolution. This gives insight into the interaction between nanoparticles and also the activity coefficient which describes these non-ideal solutions.
