Highly oxygenated graphene nanosheets (OGNs) were produced from the pristine graphene nanosheets (GNs) prepared via a controlled detonation of acetylene with oxygen. OGNs produced are about 250 nm in size and are hydrophilic in nature. A huge alteration in carbon to oxygen ratio (C/O) was determined from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The C/O ratio in the pristine GNs was typically at or about 49:1 which was reduced to at or about 1:1 in OGNs after oxidation. This C/O in OGNs is the least ever found in any other oxidized graphitic material.
