Cu-Fe and Cu-Mo heterobimetallic complexes have been used to mediate deoxygenation reactions of CO2 and N2O. In the case of CO2, catalyst control of product selectivity was achieved in catalytic reductions with pinacolborane: perfect selectivity for CO2 deoxygenation to CO or CO2 hydroboration to the borylformate was achieved with the presence or absence, respectively, of a Cu-Mo bimetallic effect in the catalyst system. In the case of N2O, Cu-Fe cooperativity was exploited to mediate stoichiometric oxygen atom transfer from N2O to PPh3, a transformation that was not observed with Cu-only or Fe-only analogues of the system. A well-defined decay pathway for the Cu-Fe system prevented catalytic turnover in this case, and efforts towards catalyst development through ligand modification will be presented.
