Mixed valent vanadium oxyhydroxides and their derivatives have attracted great attention due to their important potential applications in catalysis, lithium ion batteries and, and chemical sensors. These vanadium oxyhydroxides have previously been synthesized via the sol-gel process, electro deposition and hydrothermal reactions. Although there are numerous methods for their synthesis, aqueous reactions with minimal byproducts are preferable. Previously, we discovered that aluminum vanadium oxyhydroxides could be synthesized through aqueous reaction of vanadyl oxalate with aluminum oxide and hydroxides. This method was extended to synthesize several mixed early transition metal vanadium oxyhydroxides; such as yttrium, lanthanum, and zirconium vanadium oxyhydroxides. The synthesis and characterization of these mixed metal vanadium oxyhydroxides will be reported. The influence of reaction time, temperature and the mixture’s stoichiometry on the morphologies of these mixed vanadium oxyhydroxides will be illustrated. The catalytic application of these mixed metal vanadium hydroxide will also be discussed.
