The Congress of the United States of America has declared a number of elements of nationally critical interest, a significant number of which are the lanthanides. Often considered with the lanthanides are the Group 3 cations, La and Y. Overlooked but just as critical due to its rarity is Sc. This presentation will focus on the extraction, manipulation, and deposition of Sco as a means to recycle the rare earth metals. A number of Sc salts (NO3, SO4, PO4, O2CR), solvates, halides, amides, and alkoxides have been synthesized and characterized for the first time. A variety of solvent systems have been explored including novel ionic liquids for the electrochemical deposition of Sco.
