A small but important fraction of atmospheric organics reside in particulate matter. The photochemical aging processes experienced by the condensed-phase organics, and their effects on the key properties of aerosols, remain poorly explored. Highly-oxidized atmospheric organic compounds may additionally partition into aqueous droplets and films on environmental surfaces, where they become accessible to aqueous chemical and photochemical processes such as oxidation by OH, direct photolysis, oligomerization, metal catalyzed reactions, etc. This paper will present recent laboratory studies of photochemistry of atmospherically relevant organics in aqueous and organic phases. The specific model systems will include: (a) aqueous solutions of secondary organic aerosols; (b) films of secondary organic aerosols; (c) selected organic compounds dissolved in water or organic solvents; (d) secondary organic aerosol particles.
