I will analyze in this talk the molecular content of Carbon rich evolved stars as derived from observations in the millimeter, submillimeter, far-IR and mid-IR domains. The analysis of these data permits to derive molecular abundances as function of the distance to the central star and to model the chemistry of the envelope from the innermost to the external layers of the envelope. The chemistry of carbon-rich molecules and the possible routes for the formation of large molecules will be discussed. The role of UV photons in the chemistry from the AGB to the protoplanetary nebula phases will be also analyzed. I will also present recent results on the spatial structure and molecular abundance profiles of the inner layers of the envelope obtained with ALMA.
