Severe safety concerns relating to possible leakage of the LEs and explosion of the conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are obstacles for their application to large-scale energy storage devices such as electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems.1, 2 A bulk-type all-solid-state lithium battery (ASLB) where a mixture of sulphide SEs and active materials are fabricated in the electrode layer is considered as an ultimate solution.2, 3 High ionic conductivities of 10-3-10-2 S cm-1 and ductility of several sulphide materials enables the sulphide SEs to be one of the most appropriate candidates for the bulk-type ASLBs.3 However, there must be a breakthrough in energy density of ASSLBs to compete with the conventional LIBs. In this presentation, we report on two approaches to enhance energy density of the bulk-type ASLBs. In the first part, our recent result on Ti-based electrode architecture will be presented. Mechanochemical treatment of TiS2 and Li3PS4 glass ceramic (LPS) SE results in dramatic increase of capacities. Analyses using HRTEM and ex-situ XPS reveals that the abnormally increased capacity is attributed to an amorphous Li-Ti-P-S phase formed by partial reaction between TiS2 and LPS SE. In the second part, results of high energy ASLBs enabled by applying organic-inorganic hybrid SE films will be presented. A free-standing SE film with thickness less than 100 mm and good mechanical property allows to increase energy density by more than four times (Figure 1). References (1) Goodenough, J.
