Evaluation of friction in the boundary lubrication regime that can adequately simulate the conditions and materials using in an actual fired engine presents a challenging problem. A basic tool for quick, simple and inexpensive evaluation of lubricant formulations has been developed that provides information on the behavior of film formation and removal of various friction modifiers using actual metal parts from the standard engine used for (ASTM Sequence VI) evaluation of fuel economy. Characterization of friction modifiers and correlation of chemistry with rate of film formation, friction lowering and film tenacity has been achieved using this method.
