Since 1994, MIOX Corporation has been the leading innovator for the development and commercialization of on-demand chemistry production technologies. Core to MIOX’s process is an electrolytic On-Site Generation (OSG) system, which is used to convert an aqueous stream containing a commodity chemical such as sodium chloride brine into a high-value oxidant-containing product solution such as MIOX’s proprietary Mixed Oxidant Solution. Oxidant solutions produced by the OSG system are then injected into a water stream with the primary treatment goal being the inactivation of microorganisms present in the water and often coupled to secondary benefits such as the oxidation of undesired chemical components of the water. Using OSG to produce active water treatment chemicals when and where needed offers a number of benefits relative to the traditional method of delivery of bulk chemical to a point-of-use, including substantial cost savings, decreasing chemical transportation costs, and significant improvements to worker safety. Currently, MIOX’s OSG systems are used worldwide in a variety of water treatment applications and in several market verticals, including municipal potable water, municipal wastewater, cooling waters, oil and gas production waters, food and beverage production, and recreational waters. MIOX’s innovation of OSG systems focuses on both the OSG system itself as well as the chemistry produced in the electrolysis process. Extensive engineering research has allowed MIOX to introduce a number of unique features to OSG equipment in recent years, including the ability for the system to automatically clean the electrolytic cell, thereby substantially reducing periodic required maintenance. More recently, research at MIOX has allowed for the diversification of product chemistries by finding new ways to utilize chlorine-based oxidant solutions or developing the capability of electrolyzing multicomponent brines. These new chemistries, for example the combination of a standard chlorine-based oxidant stream with ultraviolet light to initiate an Advanced Oxidation Process for the removal of organic microcontaminants from water, are allowing MIOX to tailor-design application specific water treatment chemistries which enhance the overall performance of the water treatment process under different conditions.
