Formation of C-N bonds is an important process in organic chemistry given that nitrogen heterocycles are ubiquitous in natural products, designed chemotherapeutics, and materials. We have developed a phosphorous-mediated C-N bond forming reaction using 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds to achieve carbene-like reactivity for the synthesis of heteroatom containing frameworks. These compounds could then be easily derivatized to achieve synthetically useful targets. This method could be employed for the construction of heterocycles, which are used for the production of biologically active molecules and as materials for CO<sub>2</sub> capture and utilization. The scope of the reaction and its synthetic utility will be discussed. Mechanistic insight into the reaction based on isolated intermediates, and the application of products related to carbon separation will be disclosed.
