Fmoc-protected amino acids featuring "bipy-like" side-chains are readily prepared by reaction of azides with ethynylpyridines. Copper(II) complexes of the ligands have been studied by electronic absorption spectroscopy, ESI-MS, and DFT techniques. Efforts to incorporate the modified amino acids into peptides using standard solid-phase synthesis protocols will be presented.
