Alkyne metathesis is a powerful tool to form the rigid C≡C bond and has been widely used to synthesize organic compounds and materials, including natural products, shape-persistent 2-D macrocycles and rigid 3-D covalent organic polyhedrons (COPs, i.e., molecular cages), organic polymers, and porous materials. In the past two decades, numerous well-defined catalytic systems based on Schrock-type molybdenum(VI) and tungsten(VI) alkylidyne complexes have been developed. Recently, our group reported a series of multidentate molybdenum(VI) carbyne catalysts. Those multidentate alkyne metathesis catalysts show excellent catalytic activity, broad functional group tolerance, longer lifetime, and completely inhibit the undesired polymerization of the 2-butyne by-product. In this work, we will discuss the development of a new generation of multidentate triphenol ligands, and the alkyne metathesis activities of their molybdenum(VI) carbyne complexes.
