NMR spectroscopy monitors chemical processes in aqueous solutions through the solute proton signal. The water proton signal is usually eliminated through either solvent deuteration or water signal suppression. But the water proton signal is much more intense than any solute proton signal and therefore could be extremely valuable if it can used to probe solute chemistry. Examples of using the water proton NMR signal to characterize solute association in aqueous solutions will be presented. The contribution of the solute-water diamagnetic susceptibility contrast to the sensitivity of the water proton signal toward solute association will be discussed, using both fluorinated and non-fluorinated surfactants.
