The long-view of nanotechnology development for establishing control of matter at the nanoscale may be separated in to three stages, each dominated by a different focus: phenomenological basics and synthesis of nanocomponents (2000-2010), nanosystem integration by design for fundamentally new products (2010-2020), and creation of new technology platforms with other emerging technologies and socio-economic divergence (after 2020). In a relatively short time interval for a foundational technology, nanotechnology has made a significant economic impact in numerous sectors including semiconductor manufacturing, catalysts, medicine, agriculture, and energy production reaching $1 trillion world market of nano-enabled products in 2013, with annual increases of about 40% since 2011. None of this could be realized and expanded without establishing the foundational knowledge and infrastructure. The programs, centers and network contributing to this progress are outlined. The main contributions and new domains in nanoscale science and engineering will be discussed. The concepts and outcomes from ten networks at national level created to support research, education, innovation and user-facilities will be described. The vision formulated in 1999-2000 and evaluated in 2011 (www.wtec.org/nano2/) has promised a general purpose technology by 2020. There is an increased focus on nanoscale science and engineering integration with other knowledge and technology domains and their applications (www.wtec.org/NBIC2-Report/).
