Zeolites are known to play important roles in petroleum refining [1] and chemical production. In addition, modification of the physical and/or chemical properties of zeolites and other metal oxides has also been done in a variety of methods [2,3]. In this study, as part of a recent paper, a proton zeolite (SiO2:Al2O3 = 5.2) was treated with triethyl amine (TEA) in an effort to affect the type(s) of reactive site(s) present in the zeolite. Subsequently, the chemical nature of the treated zeolite was characterized by temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) and methanol adsorption at 90oC. Methanol was adsorbed on the TEA treated zeolite both before and after the TPSR of TEA. Before TPSR of the TEA, 150 umol MeOH/g was irreversibly adsorbed. After TPSR of the TEA, 850 umol MeOH/g was irreversibly adsorbed—over a 5x increase in irreversibly adsorbed methanol. The data indicate that all of the methanol adsorbed on the TEA-treated sample desorbed unreacted. When methanol was adsorbed on the zeolite after the TPSR, the majority of the adsorbed methanol reacted to dimethyl ether (DME)—indicating the additional methanol was adsorbed on Brønsted acid sites, which were originally decorated by adsorbed TEA. These methods of chemical adsorption characterizations with methanol provided a significant understanding of the amine-treated zeolite and supported the other characterization data obtained by XPS, Raman and IR spectroscopies, 27Al-MAS NMR, and XRD
