Alkene halogenation is a fundamental transformation, but the development of selective variants has lagged behind that of many other reactions in the field of asymmetric catalysis. This represents a significant gap in stereoselective methodology given the widespread use of organohalogens as intermediates in organic synthesis and the prevalence of chiral bioactive polyhalogenated small molecules in nature. A major focus of our research program is on the development of enabling catalytic regio-, chemo-, and enantioselective halogenation chemistry. Such efforts and the strategic application of this technology to the synthesis of complex halogenated natural products will be discussed.
