Metallic nanostructures have been the subject of considerable research due to their unique mechanism for light interaction and the considerable number of applications that result from, or are enhanced by, these interactions.  Recently, the synthesis of highly crystalline Ag:SiO<sub>2</sub>:Ag core:spacer:shell (CSS) particles of varying geometries by the hydrogen reduction method was reported. Herein, we report the synthesis of CSS particles with ‘reporter’ molecules embedded in the spacer layer.  SERS and SEF enhancement factors of the embedded molecules are reported with respect to concentration within the spacer layer and layer thickness.  Finally, the utility of the reporter molecule as an internal standard for SERS spectroscopy is explored.
