Modern drug discovery is hard to imagine without fluorine: ca. 20% of all pharmaceuticals contain this element. To date, however, only a tiny part of the theoretically possible building block structures are synthesized. Many simple combinations of fluorine with carbon and nitrogen atoms are still unknown. Commercially accessible fluorinated alicyclic amines are mostly limited to pyrrolidines and piperidines. The latter are quite popular in medicinal chemistry (Figure a).
