Researchers still have little knowledge about the delicate chemical equilibriums in metal-organic framework (MOF) crystallization processes. Even though various MOFs have already been made through the conventional one-pot processes, the preparation of ultra-stable MOFs with great crystallinity and high porosity still remains a major challenge. Herein, we demonstrate that MOF crystal growth can be kinetically controlled through stepwise synthetic routes. MOFs can be divided into organic and inorganic modules; each module can be judiciously selected and carefully pre-designed. All the important reactions and equilibriums will be listed and thoroughly analyzed; this “total analysis” leads to facile routes to MOFs that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to prepare.
