Through the ACS-IREU program and the DAAD-RISE scholarship I was able to conduct research for ten weeks at the University of Hamburg in Germany. My project involved the synthesis and characterization of light responsive hybrid polymer surfaces. Stimuli-responsive polymers have a multitude of applications in the biomedical and materials science fields. The program enabled me to work on an individual project while receiving guidance from a principal investigator and a cohort of graduate students. Throughout my stay in Germany I explored Europe and met many undergraduates from the US, UK, and Canada working on projects of their own. I had a number of unforgettable experiences such as watching the Germany win the World Cup alongside thousands of fans at a public viewing. Additionally, I found many friends and important connections in the polymer chemistry field. My stay in Germany solidified my desire to pursue a PhD and has encouraged me to explore international options for research.
