Considerable challenges exist in the effective teaching of of large gateway STEM courses, particularly at large universities with very high enrollments. In this talk, we present some of the strategies we have explored at Rutgers for using online technologies in support of education in General Chemistry. In particular, we present several innovative adaptive online learning technologies that, together, pave the way for the development of new Academic Social Networks (ASNs) that allow students to logically connect with one another in study groups or for one-on-one peer-mentoring centered on general chemistry concepts and problem solving. These online tools offer the potential to create new online eLearning environments that enhance the student experience, provide social incentives for academic excellence, and deliver a higher level of personalized instruction.
