Electricity generated directly from sunlight is clean renewable energy and one of the fastest growing energy sources in the world. Solar systems installed on residential roofs can provide for &gt; 50% of the household energy demand and remain a largely untapped, but rapidly growing segment in the solar sector. A durable, affordable and aesthetically appealing product that can survive the harsh and ever changing environmental conditions on the roof can make a significant contribution to providing clean energy to take on some of the society’s most pressing problems. Understanding the physics of failure, extensive reliability testing and failure quantitation is critical for delivering a new product in this space. A multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving driven by a team of Engineers, Chemists and Material Scientists was critical to the successful launch of the Dow POWERHOUSE™ Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) shingle product.
