The synthesis of 3d and mixed 3d/4f molecular clusters containing bridging oxide ions continues to be a source of ongoing interest to many research groups, including ours, due to their interesting physical properties, particularly in the field of molecular magnetism. These molecular magnets can be thought of as small fragments of 3-D metal-oxide magnets. Our focus on molecular versions of 3-D magnetic materials has recently been expanded to include materials which exhibit a second important physical property in addition to magnetism, such as ferroelectricity, resistivity, or elasticity; such materials are commonly known as multiferroics. Many of these multiferroic materials have a perovskite-type structure with a repeating unit consisting of transition metal ions forming the vertices of a cube, oxide ions on the faces, and a heterometal at the center. Therefore, the isolation of a “molecular multiferroic” that shows multiple physical properties is being targeted as an alternative bottom-up route to nanoscale multiferroics In this presentation will be described the synthesis, structure, magnetic, electric, and electrochemical properties of a new molecular perovskite: [CeIII2CeIVMnIII8O8(O2CPh)18(HO2CPh)2].
