Tuberculosis (TB) disease has re-emerged over the past twenty years in the form of multi-drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MDR-TB). MDR-TB is defined as the resistance to the two front-line drugs used to treat TB namely isoniazid and rifampin. New and effective treatments are needed to combat MDR-TB. Metal-based drugs containing cobalt have shown activity against clinical isolates of MDR-TB. Mycobacterium tuberculosis has inherent sensitivity to cobalt and this can be exploited in developing new pharmaceuticals for treatment against MDR-TB.
