In certain cases nitrile imies R-CNN-R' can exist in bond-shift isomeric forms, i.e. both the allenic (R-C(-)=N(+)=N-R') and the propargylic (R-CN(+)-N(-)-R') form may represent energy minima. The existence of a third form, the carbenic nitrile imines R-C(:)-N=N-R' is also postulated, and its rectivity is predicted.
