Biopharmaceutical processes utilize a large number of fermentation media and purification buffer solutions. The preparation, transfer and holding of those solutions requires a large number of tanks, pipe segments and transfer panels that need regular cleaning, leading to scheduling and operational challenges. This paper presents industrial experience with a resource-constrained batch process scheduling program. The scheduling algorithm proceeds in two steps. First a bottleneck analysis is done to determine a lower bound on the process cycle time, and all the batches are scheduled accordingly. Second, if conflicts remain, they are resolved by applying progressively aggressive modifications to the schedule. This approach to scheduling was tested on several biotech processes. A case study, which is based on a multiproduct facility that manufactures therapeutic proteins, illustrates the value of a constrained-resource scheduling tool for biopharmaceutical processes.
